So I resisted trying any of this
Im old man, Old school...
one day someone convinced me to try it
I ordered a Yeyhoo FT70dr on sale and a bunch of accessories of course
so I got it all going, watched 47,000 youtube videos
I have tried somethings
whats this wiresx stuff anyway?
They said i could go to other rooms and talk to people all over
but
In order to do this I have to change the local repeater to anther "room"
This makes some hamms unhappy yes i changed it back after i was done
they say I need a hotspot or something so i can use the internet directly and not cause drama
So now I have yet another HT with very few people to talk with
Im disabled live in a small apartment cant do HF, thought this would be fun
nope
I may have to take up underwater basket weaving or something
sigh
is DMR any different, i doubt it

@"W1DVR"#p238 thanx what i need is help knowing what hotspot and trying to afford it
been disabled a few years living on ss disability sucks
dr says i cant work heart problems
Totally get it. Hang in there. A Pi-Star hotspot is your best bet on a budget, sometimes you can find used ones cheap or even donated. I’ll keep an ear out if someone’s got a spare. You’re not alone.
thanx so much to learn but thats part of the fun of radio
@"W8FIK"#p237 totally get where you're coming from. You gave it a real shot, and that’s more than most. Wires-X and digital modes can be confusing at first, especially with local repeater politics involved. A hotspot (like a Pi-Star or OpenSpot) would definitely let you explore without stepping on toes. Just plug it in, connect your radio, and jump into rooms around the world without changing anything for others.
As for DMR... it’s different, but also a bit of a rabbit hole. Still, with a hotspot, it opens up tons of talkgroups and activity. Could be worth a try before you pick up that underwater basket weaving!
You're not alone, a lot of us are figuring it out together. Let me know if you want help setting up a hotspot.
